Nevertheless, Vitellius, the occupant of the throne, had on his side the veteran legions of Gaul and the Rhineland, Rome's best troops. But the feeling in Vespasian's favour quickly gathered strength, and the armies of Moesia, Pannonia and Illyricum soon declared for him, and made him in fact master of half of the Roman world. His troops entered Italy on the north-east under the leadership of Antonius Primus, defeated the army of Vitellius at Bedriacum (or Betriacum) (which had awaited him in

Katyn Massacre
Gneizdovo village, a short distance from Smolensk. Many Poles had become prisoners of war following the invasion and defeat of Poland by the Nazis and the Soviet Union in September 1939. In 1943 the Wehrmacht discovered the mass grave of over 4000 Polish officers in the forest near Katyn and accused the Soviets of having massacred them. The Allies were aware that the Nazis had found a mass grave, as the discovery transpired, via radio transmissions intercepted and decrypted by Bletchley Park. The Soviet government denied the German charges and asserted that the Poles, war prisoners, had been captured and executed

political process increased rapidly. The first direct elections for Africans to the Legislative Council took place in 1957. The Kenya African National Union was founded in 1960. The Kenya African Democratic Union (KADU) was founded in 1960, to challenge KANU. KADU's aim was to defend the interests of the small minority tribes, such as the Kalenjin to which Moi belonged, against the dominance of the big Luo and Kikuyu tribes that comprised the majority of Kanu's membership (Kenyatta himself being a Kikuyu). KADU pressed for a federal constitution, while KANU was in favour of centralism. The advantage lay with the numerically

Karl Haushofer
Karl Haushofer General Karl Haushofer (1869 - 1946) popularised geopolitics, notably in the Nazi regime. Some researchers think that by the contact of his student Rudolf Heß, Haushofer had considerable influence on the development of Hitler's ideas of expansion. Haushofer denied strong influence on the Nazi regime and committed suicide in 1946. His son, Albrecht, was killed by the Nazis because of opposition to the government. Kaarlo Juho Ståhlberg
supported the idea of republic instead of the then-popular constitutional monarchy – the idea collapsed after elected king Väinö I of Finland declined. Stålberg also championed direct presidential elections, but the Senate chose the elector-system. The Senate elected Ståhlberg president on July 27, 1919. As a president he was formal and due to his shyness, wrote beforehand everything he had to say in public. He was a widower but remarried in 1920. He had to form various parliamentarian precedents and interpretations and nominate many short-lived cabinets. In foreign policy Ståhlberg was markedly reserved towards Sweden, cautious towards Germany, and generally unsuccessful

It is divided into four provinces, Kalimantan Barat (west, with capital Pontianak), Kalimantan Tengah (south, with capital Palangkaraya), Kalimantan Timur (northeast, with capital Samarinda), and Kalimantan Selatan (southeast, with capital Banjarmasin). Kansai
in Kinki is Japanese for miyako meaning city or metropolis. It stems from the fact that up until the Edo era Japan's capital was located in this region. The Kansai region includes the prefectures of Nara, Wakayama, Mie, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, and Shiga. The Kansai region is often compared (yet more often contrasted) with the Kanto region, which lies to the east and is comprised primarily of Tokyo and the surrounding area. Whereas the Kanto region is symbolic of standardization throughout Japan (from the government to economics to the language), the Kansai region displays many more idiosyncracies through the culture in
